When Is the Best Time to Book Your Maternity Photos?
Growing a whole little human. Pretty incredible when you stop and think about it, isn't it?
Pregnancy can feel like it goes forever, especially towards the end when you're counting down the days. But somehow, once your baby arrives, that beautiful bump becomes a memory so quickly.
As a Brisbane maternity photographer and a mum of three, I know just how special it can be to have photographs from this little chapter of motherhood.
And one of the questions I get asked all the time is, when should I actually book my maternity session?
The sweet spot: 28–34 weeks
Generally, I recommend having your maternity photos taken somewhere between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy.
By this stage, your bump is usually beautifully rounded, but you're hopefully still feeling comfortable enough to move around, enjoy the session and soak up those last weeks before baby arrives.
Of course, every pregnancy is different.
Some mamas prefer their session earlier, while others love waiting until their bump is a little bigger.
There's no one-size-fits-all approach.
Should I book a studio or sunset maternity session?
This really comes down to the kind of photographs you love.
Outdoor sunset maternity sessions
Think beautiful golden light, long grass, warm earthy colours and plenty of room to move.
I love these sessions for couples and families wanting something relaxed and natural, particularly when older siblings are joining in.
Studio maternity sessions
My little home studio in Thornlands is perfect for something a little more intimate.
Soft lighting, simple styling, bare bumps, beautiful textures and those quiet moments between you and your partner.
I especially love the timeless feel of black-and-white maternity photographs.
There's something so beautiful about stripping away the colour and letting the connection speak for itself.
What if I feel awkward in front of the camera?
Oh mama, you're not alone.
You don't need to know how to pose, where to put your hands or what to do with your face.
That's my job.
I'll gently guide you throughout the session, while leaving plenty of room for the natural little moments that make your photographs feel like you.
And if you're feeling a little self-conscious about your changing body, please know that we can work together to find clothing, angles and poses that make you feel comfortable.
When should I actually make my booking?
I'd recommend getting in touch during your second trimester if you can.
That gives us time to plan your session, choose a location and find a date that works with your pregnancy.
If you've left it a little later, please still reach out. I'll always do my best to fit you in.
These photographs are for you, too
One day, your little person will look at these images and see the mama who carried them.
And you'll get to remember what it felt like to have them so close, before you even met.
That's pretty special.
